Our most Frequently Asked Questions about Radiator Repair and Replacement
Common signs that your radiator needs repair include leaking fluid, overheating, cold spots on the radiator, strange noises, or a decrease in the vehicle's cooling performance. If you notice any of these issues, it's a good idea to have your radiator inspected by a professional mechanic.
Minor radiator issues, such as replacing a thermostat or tightening loose connections, can often be handled by DIY enthusiasts. However, more complex problems, such as leaks, corrosion, or issues with the radiator core, should be repaired by a professional to ensure proper functionality and avoid further damage to your vehicle.
The cost of radiator repair can vary depending on the extent of the damage, the type of vehicle, and labor rates in your area. On average, radiator repair costs range from $100 to $500, but replacement or extensive repairs can be more expensive.
Radiator leaks can be caused by several factors, including corrosion, cracks in the radiator core, damage from road debris, or a loose or worn-out hose. Overheating can also cause seals or the radiator itself to weaken and leak over time.
In some cases, radiators can be repaired by fixing small leaks or patching damaged areas. However, if the radiator is severely damaged, corroded, or has extensive leaks, replacement may be necessary to ensure the vehicle operates efficiently and safely. A professional technician can assess whether repair or replacement is the best option.
Signs that you may need a radiator replacement include persistent leaks that can’t be sealed, severe corrosion or damage to the radiator fins, a constant overheating issue, or a significant drop in coolant levels. If the radiator is beyond repair, replacement will be necessary to prevent engine damage.
On average, a radiator replacement can take between 2 to 4 hours, depending on the make and model of your vehicle. More complex vehicles may require additional time for the job. Be sure to check with your mechanic for a more accurate time estimate.
The cost of replacing a radiator can vary widely depending on the vehicle type, labor rates, and the quality of the radiator being installed. On average, radiator replacement costs range from $300 to $1,000, including parts and labor. Luxury vehicles or vehicles with specialized radiators may cost more..
It's not advisable to drive with a damaged radiator as it can cause your engine to overheat, leading to serious engine damage. If you suspect radiator damage, it’s important to have the vehicle towed to a repair shop to prevent further harm to the engine.
A new radiator is typically the best option for long-term reliability and performance, though it can be more expensive. A used or refurbished radiator may be cheaper, but it could come with risks of decreased efficiency or potential issues. If you're on a tight budget, consult with your mechanic to assess the condition of a used radiator before making a decision.

I have taken my 1974 bmw 2002 to these guys numerous times! Not once have I ever had bad service! These guys have Great knowledge of their craft, and that is important to me. Not only do they do a great job, they also take very good care of my vehicle while working on it. Not one scratch, not any leaks after the job is complete, and no problems after the work is complete. The technicians are very respectful, knowledgeable, and are always willing to help and prepared for every job. I appreciate this business, and the people who own and work there. I will also continue to take ALL my vehicles there. if I have a loose screw, or if I have a motor swap, These guys are the real deal, and I would recommend any of my friends and family to them any day. Thank you Mcdonough Radiator for your hard work and consistent work ethic. It's truly a trustworthy place to have work done, hands down. My husband and I were traveling home to Huntsville al on a Friday evening. While we were traveling our radiator blew. We were already planning on staying in the truck since no local auto zone or anyone had a radiator in stock. We found McDonough radiator shop around the corner. Mind you by this point it's already 4 in the evening. Not only was the mechanic and owner willing to stay over on a Friday evening, but they were amazing. They made sure we had everything and made sure our truck was safe and working great before letting us leave. They were very professional and their prices were reasonable. If I go back through that town again I believe I will stop and just say thank you for rescuing us when we needed it the most.
